CFS Elderly assistance program helps 12 clients receive dentures

From the October 2011 South Plains Catholic

LUBBOCK- Catholic Family Service, Inc., helped twelve clients receive dentures through the Catholic social agency’s Elderly Outreach Program.

Beth Zarate, Executive Director of CFS, said the Elderly Outreach Program, which is funded by the Lubbock Area United Way, targets its services to low income seniors in Lubbock County.  The program provides prescription medications, hearing aids, eye exams and eye glasses, and dental care and dentures so that the quality of life to these individuals is improved.

These clients lack the means to pay for all their health needs and by utilizing this program they can alleviate some of the physical pain and improve the quality of their lives.

In 2010, CFS served 417 low income elderly clients; 19 percent were assisted with much needed and life sustaining prescriptions,  five percent with hearing aids, 29 percent with eye exams and eyeglasses, and the remaining 47 percent of clients received assistance with general dental care and full or partial dentures. “We are seeing an increased need in our community for dental care and dentures,” Zarate said. “CFS staff were encountering a long waiting list to get clients into community centers for help, so CFS board member Dr. Brad Brooks made a plea to fellow dentists in the community.”

The first call we received was from Dr. Brit Bostick who asked how many clients we had on our waiting list, and, then, generously agreed to serve all 12 of them.

“When compassion is working in our community,” Zarate said, “so much good can be accomplished.”

On September 14, the 12 clients greeted the Abbeville Dentistry staff with big hugs and excitement. The CFS clients had their initial screening for a full set of dentures.

Zarate said nine female clients ranging from age 60 to 80 years old and three male clients ranging in age from 61 to 70 received assistance.

“I have been dealing with mouth pain for over 2 years now,” Jimmy Moore said. “I am so grateful to Catholic Family Service for their help in arranging it so that I could receive dentures. God is good.”

Moore said he is looking forward to eating better and smiling more.

Zarate said the clients were experiencing months of mouth pain, inability to chew, weight loss and low self-esteem. She said the Abbeville Dentistry staff were kind and compassionate.

“It was truly a great day for our clients and for CFS staff,” Zarate said. “Our mission is to serve the least among us, and with the continued support of the faithful of our diocese we will be here today, tomorrow and the next day...providing help, creating hope and serving those who need us.”

Linda Hightower, one of the clients who received assistance, said she has been trying to get help for years. She said she is happy to know she will have her smile back.

She said Dr. Bostick and his staff made her feel welcomed, and they were so kind and friendly.

“I am so appreciative of Catholic Family Service,” Hightower said. “I have been trying to get help for my mouth for years. I am so happy knowing that soon I will have my smile back and be able to eat whatever I want.”

Catholic Family Service was created 26 years ago with the purpose of serving those in need, needs, which are widely varied.

Catholic Family Service takes its mission of living committed to the social Gospel as contained in Matthew 25:40— “Whenever you did this for one of the least important of these, you did it for me.”

The Catholic social agency takes its mandate from the Diocese of Lubbock to serve people of all faiths, acting always in favor of the poor, while challenging oppression and injustice.

CFS strives to empower those served and those who help serve to become all they can become - brothers and sisters in the Lord as members of the Body of Christ.
