DID YOU KNOW...

  • The Self Sufficiency Program has been recognized by the State of Texas as best outcomes for helping people transition from poverty to financial self sufficiency.

  • Last year 87 people in Lubbock County moved their households out of poverty.

  • A majority of those enrolled on the program are studying in the nursing social work, and education fields.

The Self Sufficiency Program assists mainly single, low income parents who are striving to complete their college education so that they can obtain a good job that pays a living, family wage.  The types of help offered through this program include tuition, books, rent, childcare, and utilities.

As part of the Self Sufficiency Program, CFS offers a Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) that helps families develop budgeting skills so that they may gradually pay more of their utility bill and become self sufficient in this area in a short time.  Volunteers are utilized by helping with budgeting workshops that are offered to those receiving assistance and they are utilized as office assistants that help keep the many files and records organized.

Helping single parents complete their education and become competitive in the job market is one of the surest roads to becoming empowered as the head of a household.  In this way, these families are building a better life for themselves and the community gains another professional who can in turn help others.
